AI Usage Policy

Jurnal Lintas Keperawatan (JLK) recognizes that artificial intelligence (AI) and AI-assisted technologies can support authors in preparing manuscripts. However, their use must be responsible, transparent, and must not compromise the originality, accuracy, and integrity of nursing research. This policy applies to authors, reviewers, and editors of JLK.

1. Permitted Use (AI-Assisted)

AI tools may be used only as supporting tools in the writing process, such as:

Language Editing

Correcting grammar, spelling, and sentence structure.

Translation and Readability

Translating text or improving the clarity and academic tone of text written by the authors.

Literature Searching

Helping to find relevant literature or to explore research ideas, provided that every source is checked and read by the authors.

Coding and Basic Data Processing

Assisting with programming code or basic statistical procedures on data collected by the authors (excluding data generation or manipulation).

2. Prohibited Use (AI-Generated)

The following uses are considered serious violations of publication ethics:

AI as an Author

AI tools cannot be listed as an author or co-author, because they cannot take responsibility or be held accountable for the work.

Data Fabrication and Manipulation

Using AI to generate research data, create or alter scientific images, fabricate patient or respondent information, or falsify findings.

Fully AI-Generated Manuscripts

Submitting a manuscript, or substantial parts of it such as the discussion or conclusion, that is produced by AI rather than written by the authors.

Undisclosed Use

Using AI tools in preparing the manuscript without declaring it as required in Section 3.

3. Disclosure Requirements

Authors must declare any use of AI tools in a statement entitled "Artificial Intelligence / AI-Assisted Technologies" in the Title Page (Statements & Declarations section). The statement must include:

Tool Used

The name and version of the AI tool (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini, Grammarly).

Purpose and Scope

The specific purpose and the parts of the manuscript or research process in which the tool was used.

Example statements:

"During the preparation of this manuscript, [tool name and version] was used for [specific purpose]. The authors reviewed and edited the output and take full responsibility for the final content."

"The authors declare that no generative AI or AI-assisted technologies were used in the preparation of this manuscript."

4. Accountability

  • Author responsibility: Authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy of the data, analysis, interpretation, conclusions, and references in their manuscript, including any part prepared with the help of AI.
  • Risk of hallucination: AI tools may produce incorrect facts or non-existent references. Authors must verify every piece of information and every citation against the original sources.
  • Confidentiality: Authors must not enter identifiable patient or respondent data into AI tools.

5. Policy for Reviewers and Editors

Reviewers

Reviewers must not upload manuscripts, or any part of them, to AI tools, as this breaches the confidentiality of the review process. The review report must reflect the reviewer's own expert assessment.

Editors

Editors may use AI-based tools only for administrative and technical tasks, such as similarity checking. Editorial decisions on acceptance or rejection must be made by the editors, not by AI.

6. Violations

Manuscripts found to violate this policy before publication may be returned to the authors or rejected. If a violation is found after publication, the case will be handled in accordance with the Retraction, Withdrawal, and Correction (R-W-C) Policy and COPE guidelines, which may result in a correction or retraction of the article.

This policy refers to the COPE position statement on Authorship and AI tools and the ICMJE Recommendations.
